Nearly a month ago, on 10 August 2020, Cleveland Indians announced that Mike Clevinger would not be in his next scheduled start as he broke the team's Coronavirus (COVID-19) prevention protocols. For three weeks, Clevinger imagined himself being criticized by teammates and demoted to the Indians' alternate training site before he was called for a start in late August 2020.
However, the Cleveland Indians traded him to the San Diego Padres, and Clevinger says that it was merely coincidental. Concerning Monday's MLB Trade Deadline Deal, Clevinger mentioned that 'the reality is that a breakup with the Indians was always in the cards.'
Speaking on the conference with the reporters, Clevinger stated:
"Just looking from a business standpoint, I think this might have been inevitable at this point. [The Indians are] looking for a bat and I've got two years of team control. You've got a lot more years of team control on the guys younger than me in the rotation. You've got [Carlos Carrasco] already locked up and this is the position that we've had a plethora of talent in for years. So I think this was inevitable either way, whether or not Chicago happened."
After the game against the White Sox, Clevinger and his teammate were charged with breaking the Coronavirus protocols. Plesac was sent home for breaking curfew while Clevinger's action, too, came to light. In the meantime, his teammates initiated the pressure on the team. While pitcher Adam Plutko called out his teammates for his actions, reliever Oliver Perez threatened to leave the team if no actions were to be taken.
But Mike Clevinger believes that his departure from the Cleveland Indians was merely a matter of dollars and sense.
