Leylah had her last-minute ticket to the quarter-finals of the women’s Grand Slam just a day before her 19th birthday. She had her hard-win of 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 over the former world No. 1, Angelique Kerber, while she took over her losing battle in the decisive third set by twice breaking Kerber for a commanding 5-2 advantage.
The 19-year-old has already set some stunning records at the US Open history by defeating a two-time US Open champ Naomi Osaka, just before her win over another former champ and No. 16 seed Angelique Kerber. Though her fellow competitors at the competition are also professional-class tennis players, the crowd is still mesmerized by the teenager’s impressive win over some former champs.
The audiences turned their eyes, and the tennis court sparked their lights on the tennis player during her stunning win over the defending champion Naomi Osaka in 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-4, which led her to her first-ever Round of 16 nomination at the Grand Slam.

Leylah Fernandez was born on 6 September 2002, in Montreal, Canada, as Leylah Annie Fernandez, to former soccer player father Jorge Fernandez and mother, Irene Exevea. She is of mixed ethnicity since Leylah comes from a father with Ecuadorian origins and mother, Canadian of Filipino origins. She has two sisters; Bianca Jolie Fernandez, a fellow tennis player, and Jodeci Fernandez, a dentist.
As a child of the athlete father, Leylah was introduced to the world of sports at the age of 5. She went on to explore the world for athletes, trying different sports like football, track and field, and such, among which she found tennis the most enjoyable. She then went on to invest her time in tennis since the young age of seven.
Though, with no experience in tennis, her father, Jorge, created every training regime he could to help develop Leylah’s techniques in tennis.
