Now the 'Black Lives Matter' campaign has gone to all heights. It recently attained the stake of all business and commercial industries about the pay gap between black and white people. Well, there were several approaches brought for the equality of the gender pay gap, but in recent times, the pay gap based on race has come forth once again.
It all came after the American actress, Viola Davis's video from 2018 resurfaced that addressed how unfair is paying strategy for the black actors, especially women. The clip is from an interview with Tina Brown at a Women of the World event in 2018.
In the video, the award-winning actress, who hails from her hometown, St. Matthews, South Carolina, mentions the gender pay gap as well as the ethnicity pay gap.
In the clip, Viola Davis said:
"I got the Oscar, I got the Emmy, I got the two Tonys, I've done Broadway, I've done off-Broadway, I've done TV, I've done film, I've done all of it."
"I have a career that's probably comparable to Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, Sigourney Weaver," she continued onstage. "They all came out of Yale, they came out of Julliard, they came out of NYU. They had the same path as me, and yet I am nowhere near them, not as far as money, not as far as job opportunities, nowhere close to it."
Although Davis has portrayed roles in several big movies, including Doubt, The Help, How to Get Away with Murder, and Widows, she has not been paid well and equitably as white actresses. However, Davis' call to 'Pay Me What I'm Worth' has been the need of today's world, not only in the entertainment industry but in all the commercial as well as industrial sectors.
Not only Viola Davis, but several other colored actresses like Halle Berry, Mary J. Blige, Taraji P. Henson, Lynn Whitfield, and others are the victims of the ethnicity pay gap. They even addressed being black women in the industry for T Magazine a few months back.
