Eddie Redmayne's Trans Role In Danish Girl Was A Mistake

Recently, British actor Eddie Redmayne talked with the UK’s Sunday Times about his controversial role in The Danish Girl and called it a mistake. The actor said, “No, I wouldn’t take it on now. I made that film with the best intentions, but I think it was a mistake.” He continued, “The bigger discussion about the frustrations around casting is because many people don’t have a chair at the table. There must be a leveling. Otherwise, we are going to carry on having these debates.”

The 39-year-old actor starred as a transgender woman Lili Elbe in the 2015 film The Danish Girl, for which he got nominated for Academy Award and Oscar. The film was helmed by Tom Hooper and was based on the life of Lili Elbe, who was one of the first people to undergo gender reassignment surgery. However, many people were not happy with the nominations and criticized that the role should have gone to an actual trans actor.

He was also criticized by trans writer, Carol Grant calling the casting ‘regressive, reductive and contribute to harmful stereotypes.' She continued to claim the movie was a transmisogynist.

The actor is set to star in a new production of Cabaret as the Emcee, about which he said, “Of all the characters I've ever read, this one defies pigeonholing. I would ask people to come and see it before casting judgment.” His character in the production is often played by LGBT actors.

The British actor has given support to the transgender community by disagreeing with JK Rowling’s controversial tweet, which said People who menstruate rather than women. He said, “Respect for transgender people remains a cultural imperative, and over the years, I have been trying to constantly educate myself. This is an ongoing process.”

He made sure where he stood and disagreed with Jo’s comments and said, “Trans women are women, and Trans men are men, and non-binary identities are valid. I would never want to speak on behalf of the community, but I do know that my dear transgender friends and colleagues are tired of this constant questioning of their identities, which all too often results in violence and abuse. They simply want to live their lives peacefully, and it’s time to let them do so.”
