The Youth Poet Laureatte, Amanda Gorman has launched her latest poem, New Day’s Lyric via a short film released exclusively on instagram that captures 2021 in verses reflecting all the lessons the 2021 taught us. She was pictured in a white, one shouldered gown by Cong Tri and she had her hair in braids by Malika Palmer.
As a caption, the best selling author wrote, “I wrote a New Day’s Lyric both to celebrate the new year & honor both the hurt & the humanity of the last one. To pay my words forward, I’m raising funds for the International Rescue Committee (IRC) @rescueorg whose response to the coronavirus pandemic and humanitarian crises provide lifesaving programs to vulnerable communities worldwide. She said, “My speech impediment was dropping several letters that I just could not say for several years, most specifically the ‘r’ sound. I had to really work at it and practise to get to where I am today.”

Amanda Gorman was born to a single mother, Joan Wicks alongside her twin sister, Gabrielle in 1998. They were raised by her mother alone with another sibling in Los Angeles, California. Her mother, Joan pursued doctorate and master’s degree in Education while raising them and she was also a sixth-grade English teacher and played a huge role in influencing Amanda to know the importance of Black community and education.
She had shared, “Having a mother as a sixth-grade English teacher in an inner-city public school gave me an up-close and personal view of how literacy influences young students. I realized that education can really be a life-or-death resource.. School and college is a pathway to get off the streets, to break a cycle. She inspires me everyday to seek higher education not only for myself, but for the other students around me.”
Her twin sister, Gabrielle is also an activist and film writer. She has directed documentaries in the past and attended UCLA School to gradauate with degree in Film and Television. She has attended Sundance Film Festival as a YoungArts x Sundance Ignite fellow and interned for the interim executive director at Ava Duvernay’s Array, Regina Miller. Gabrielle was also one of the 60 artists in the nation nominated to be a US Presidential Scholar in the Arts.
