Anna Sorkin, who pretended to be Anna Devley, reportedly released from the Orange County Correctional Facility in NY to be deported from the United States. She was going to be on a flight to Frankfurt on Monday Night.
She has been featured in the Netflix docu-drama 'Inventing Anna' since overstaying a visa. She was sentenced to between four and 12 years when she was found guilty in April 2019 of grand theft and other charges like scamming wealthy New Yorkers out of hundreds of thousands of dollars and getting a huge loan to set up a high-end members-only club in Manhattan.
Anna was taken into custody by ICE when she got out on a merit release in February, as per the record of the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision's inmate lookup website. She was accused of deceiving friends and financial institutions into believing that she had a fortune of $67 million overseas that would pay for her high-end clothing, luxury hotel stays, and trans-Atlantic travel as per the prosecutors' research.
It was also reported that Anna forged financial records in an application for a $22 million loan to fund a private art club, and when denied, she successfully persuaded one bank to lend her $100,000, which she failed to repay. Her $70,000 and royalties from her Netflix deal were awarded as restitution to the Manhattan banks and hotels she defrauded as per the State prosecutors in court filings.
Who Is Anna Sorokin? Where Is She Now?
Anna Sorokin was known as Anna Delvey, a wealthy German heiress who had a taste for expensive wines, private jets, and designer clothes. However, she was born in Russia and moved to Germany as a teenager with her family. She invented herself as Anna Delvey and introduced herself to New York as an heiress of a German diplomat or an oil baron. In reality, she was the daughter of a former trucker who ran a heating and cooling business as per the record of New York magazine.
Anna Sorokin was charged with fraud for scamming hotels, banks, and other members of thousands of dollars. She became a media sensation even when she was in court. Her outfits were a mix of designer and high street fashion which caused many to admire her fashion sense. Even after being sentenced for four to 12 years in prison, she was released on good behavior in February 2021, but she was detained by immigration officers a couple of months later.
Therefore, she is currently awaiting deportation back to Germany. In that period, a new Netflix series based on her life aired on Netflix, and the series was titled "Inventing Anna." The series starred Emmy winner actress Julia Garner who portrayed the role of Anna Sorokin. As per New York magazine's journalist's 2018 investigation, the series was completely true and had exceptions for some completely made-up parts.
The series explored Anna Sorkin's rose and fell through the perspective of Jessica Pressler, who is a Journalist popular for penning an explosive expose on Sorokin in 2018. The series included cast with boxset royalties like Laverne Cox from Orange Is the New Black, Katie Lowes from Scandal, and Anna Chlumsky from Veep.
Anna Sorokin became more popular after the series was released on Netflix and gained more spotlight for her financial crimes and her story. With her popularity from the series, she was prohibited from the profit of the series as the money went instead to her victims as per the Son of Sam Law of 1977 that banned criminals from profiting from their crimes.
According to two sources, Anna Sorokin was to be deported to Germany on 14 March 2022, but she was also still in a 30-day period where she could appeal the decision. Anna's lawyer shared that ICE could do whatever they wanted, and she said that she was working under the presumption that Anna would get deported.
