While playing the first half from the University of Louisville against Duke Devil's men's basketball team, he went through a leg injury after landing on the court while trying to block a shot in 2013. It caused him an open fracture that protruded out his shin several inches.

Later, he got hospitalized, where doctors provided treatment. He went under a couple of hours of surgery where the surgeon inserted a rod in his tibia. Several NBA legends and basketball players, including LeBron James, the late Kobe Bryant, and Kevin Durant, offered him sympathy via social media platforms. Similarly, the former NFL players, including Joe Theismann, Michael Bush, also called upon him to support.
