During this pride month of 2021, another well-known personality and the first active athlete from the NFL, Carl Nassib, have come out as gay.
Carl announced the news in an Instagram post on 28 June 2021 that included a video message. “Just wanted to take a quick moment to say that I’m gay. I’ve been meaning to do this for a while now, but I finally feel comfortable enough to get it off my chest,” he said.
“I really have the best life, the best family, friends, and job a guy could ask for,” he added, “I’m pretty private person so I hope that you guys know that I’m really not doing this for attention. I just think that representation and visibility are so important. So I actually hope that one day videos like this and the whole coming out process are just not necessary, but until then, I’m going to do my best to cultivate a culture that’s accepting and compassionate.”
Nassib also said he donated 100k pounds to the Trevor Project, a suicide prevention service for LGBTQ youth in America.
The NFL’s community has also stepped up for him to support his decision and openness. Las Vegas Raiders’ owner Mark Davis told the Las Vegas Review-Journal: “These are personal decisions. It’s 2021, and he’s a Raider. If he’s happy, I’m happy. It takes courage. I thought we got to the point where this wasn’t [a prominent news story]. It doesn’t change my opinion of him as a man or as a Raider.”
Moreover, even the hall of fame’s NFL players, his former and current teammates, and fellow players have expressed their support for the NFL player to come out as gay.

Carl Nassib is currently in a 3-year, $25 million contracts with the Las Vegas Raiders until 2023. He received $16.75 million in guarantees. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers then recruited him. He set career highs in both sacks (6.5) and tackles for loss (12) in 2018, both higher than his career totals in both categories going into the season. In two seasons with the Buccaneers, he started 17 games and totaled 12.5 sacks.
He will now be playing his sixth NFL season this year with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Carl Nassib was born on 12 April 1993 in West Chester, Pennsylvania, USA, as Carl Paul Nassib, to parents Mary and Gilbert Nassib. He has four siblings, including an older sibling, Ryan Nassib, a backup quarterback for the New York Giants back in 2014 and 2015. He is of Arab-American descent.
He attended Malvern Preparatory School in Malvern for his education, where he was a three-year letterman in football and twice in basketball, and three times in track and field.
