In July 2006, Syleena Johnson married basketball player Kiwane Garris, a worldwide journeyman basketball player who played for various NBA and EuroLeague teams. On August 1, 2007, after forty-four hours of labor, their son Kiwane Garris Jr was born. In February 2011, she gave birth to their second son Kingston.

Syleena has two elder sisters, Syleecia and Syleette, and a brother named Chad. She was forced to receive speech therapy due to having vocal nodules as a child.
