Carolyn Bryant came into the headline recently as she was the white woman who had accused the 14-year-old Emmett Till of making improper advances at a family store in Money, Mississippi in August 1955. It was reported by Till’s cousin that he had whistled at Carolyn flew in the face of Mississippi’s racist social codes of the era.
Several pieces of evidence led to indicate that Carolyn possibly identified Emmett Till as the man who kidnapped, murdered, and threw him into the river. Carolyn’s arrest warrant was publicized at the time however, she was left free as the Leflore County sheriff didn’t want to bother her as she had two children.
The arrest warrant for Carolyn was found in the court basement nearly 70 years later after the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation initiated the team to search the basement of a Mississippi courthouse. After the arrest warrant was found, Till’s relatives want the authorities to finally arrest Carolyn who is probably in her 80s. Carolyn Bryant is still alive as of 2022.
