Real Story Behind The 'Circus Of Books'

The Circus of Book resembles a shop owned by a couple and parents named Karen and Barry Mason in Santa Monica Blvd. It is not a simple shop, but it is a gay porn shop owned by a Jewish duo, which has made its landmark for more than thirty-five years. Circus of Books was a place for the LGBTQ community of Los Angeles to socialize and be themselves.

Karen and Barry Mason, who lived a simple life attending religious school, had no idea what business they ran at the time. They were able to keep their shop secret despite the epidemic of HIV/AIDS, which thoroughly decreased their customers as well as employees.

Karen and Barry were parents of three children, namely, Rachel, Josh, and Micah. Rachel, who is also the director of the documentary, brought up the story of her parents' shop and their working mechanism during the time. She illustrated how her guardians managed a mom-and-pop chain of stores catering to the LGBTQ community by the business of pornographic materials, including adult magazines, sex toys, books, videos, and many more.

Moreover, they became the producers of the films themselves.

Nevertheless, Circus of Books shop was the center of the LGBTQ culture in the US at the time, often considered as the center of the gay universe.
