Producer Kate Horton Joins Broadway’s The Music Man After Scott Rudin Departure
In London, Kate Horton, who previously ran the Royal Court Theatre, will be taking over Scott Rudin as executive producer of The Music Man, the upcoming Broadway revival starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster.
Scott stepped down from his position on Broadway due to the allegations made against him of workplace abuse and bullying. Other formerly Rudin-produced shows, including The Lehman Trilogy, The Book of Mormon, and To Kill a Mockingbird, have announced their Rudin-less returns.
The producer made his announcement following multiple allegations of physical abuse by ex-staffers initially detailed by several outlets. “I do not want any controversy associated with me to interrupt Broadway’s well deserved return, or specifically, the return of the 1500 people working on these shows,” Rudin said at the time.
Few days after Rudin’s announcement, most of his production shows went on to work without Rudin.
Scott Rudin Faced Allegations Bullying Broadway Staff
Amidst a return set for several theatrical shows, including Broadway’s The Music Man, The Hollywood Reporter releases some of the story surrounding Scott Rudin.
In the news released, the producer was accused of yelling and physically and psychologically assaulting his underlings; one account in the article claimed Rudin sent an assistant to the emergency room after smashing a computer monitor on his hand.
Rudin has also been accused of firing an assistant for having diabetes and throwing another underling (who later died by suicide) from a moving vehicle.
Although stories about the profitable producer’s abuse go back decades – the 1994 Kevin Spacey film Swimming With Sharks about an abusive boss was reportedly based on Rudin – many have remained quiet about his alleged diabolical behavior, which reportedly includes him throwing glass bowls, staplers, snow boots, and baked potatoes at subordinates during fits of anger.
Days later, the allegations became known to the public, and a protest demonstration took place with stops at Rudin’s office and theaters where his shows are produced. A campaign is reportedly being mounted to persuade the Actors’ Equity Association to add Rudin to a “Do Not Work” list.
Amid mounting anger over allegations of Bullying, Scott broke his silence in April of 2021, saying he was “profoundly sorry” and will step back from his theatre work.
“After a period of reflection, I’ve made the decision to step back from active participation on our Broadway productions, effective immediately. My roles will be filled by others from the Broadway community and in a number of cases, from the roster of participants already in place on those shows,” Rudin said in a statement.
