Nadine Shah Was Sexually Assaulted In London

Nadine Shah revealed the news of her getting sexually assaulted by four men in the streets of London in a series of social media posts. She shared photos and descriptions of a reported sexual assault last month which was then deleted.

Then again, she re-shared the images on Twitter explaining that she was doing so after being verbally attacked and physically threatened in her new home in Ramsgate. She captioned the post, “Here’s me a month ago after being sexually assaulted by four men in the street. Tonight a man verbally abused me, and it brought back all that fear again, so much so I’m going to leave my new home of Ramsgate. I’m so fucking tired. Leave women the fuck alone!”

Furthermore, she added in other tweets, “ And these are just the scars you see on the surface. Those men that night robbed me of my dignity and did far worse than the marks you can see. And I’m in a place where I can now speak about it. The abuse of women is every day and everywhere.” She again added, “I’m not about to take any more shit from abusive men even if that means losing friends. Tonight was the last straw. I’m not tolerating any more bad behavior from bullies. Fuck yourself.”

Then, she went on Instagram to write, “Call out your mates, don’t defend your friends or husbands of their foul behavior. Call them out. Tonight I relieved the abuse all over again, and I wasn’t believed again. It fucking hurts. I’m lucky in that I have access to this platform where I can speak to thousands of you. Thousands of women don’t.”

Personal Life Of Nadine Shah

Nadine Shah released her first album in 2013 named Love Your Dum and Mad, which was dedicated to her former two boyfriends who died. She became an ambassador for mental health charities like Calm. Her brother had been making documentaries on the refugee frontline for years, and a film, A Syrian Love Story and inspired her track Mother Fighter that shows a conflict from a mother’s point of view.

Nadine has talked about racism and the difficulties she had faced as she comes from the mixed family of a Pakistani father and Norwegian English mother. She said, “I’ve never been white enough to be white, or brown enough to be brown. At Asian weddings, I’d get called ‘gora’ – a Pakistani slur used to describe a white skin person. And in school, I’d be called Paki.”

She had also talked about getting out of the abusive relationship where she was being tortured every day. She said, “ It was really bad. I was bullied for a long time, but it was great for lyrics writing. My personal life was so awful, it made me want to escape a lot and write about other people.”

Nadine Shah was friends with Amy Winehouse in her late teens when she moved to London to pursue music. They lived down the road from each other- both jobbing Jazz singers and became sparring partners. She recalled, “we could outdrink most people in the pub on any night and would just sing at people. We were probably very annoying. She was so witty and funny. She could charm anybody.”

Then they got distant when she had borrowed Winehouse’s band. She remembers, her final words were something along the lines of, “ I’m never talking to you again, you cow.”

After a couple of years, at a Jazz festival, Amy caught sight of Nadine from the stage and blinked and flew a kiss at her. She said that gesture was enough for her, and Amy, at the age of 27, died.

Nadine had suffered from endometriosis and had to recuperate at her parents' house when she had already moved to New York to pursue a Jazz career. She had even joked about how she would spend all the Mercury Prize money on her operations.

Nadine knew that there needed to be someone from Muslim women who could make it in the music industry and wanted to be a role model saying, “If it inspires any young Muslim women to pick up a guitar and play a song, that’s brilliant.”

She remembered two young women wearing hijabs thanked her and gave two thumbs up at her Roundhouse show. That moment she burst out crying and said, “That is a memory that’s going to stay with me forever. It makes me want to do more. I am just one version of a Muslim woman, and people don’t get to see a lot of my kind.”

Her other album, Holiday Destination (2017), was inspired by the Syrian refugee crisis and delved into post-Brexit racism and the rise of trump.

She had hoped that artists would make political albums after the coronavirus.

She had opened up about the realities of life as a touring musician being forced to shut down due to the global pandemic. She said, “ Touring is obviously my main source of income, in fact, it’s a big chunk of my income, so I had to be really realistic and go right, well I can’t afford to be paying this much rent anymore and move out to somewhere cheaper while everything is going on.”
