The Netflix star Miranda McKeon was diagnosed with rare Stage 3 breast cancer in mid-June when she found a lump on her chest. She has shared that her journey of eight weeks of intensive chemotherapy left her a bit bare.
Miranda, 19, posted on her recent Instagram post that she is about to undergo a double mastectomy. She wrote,
“ Today is the big day!!! I've been anticipating for almost 5 months. I'll be having a double mastectomy a procedure to remove all of the breast tissue under the skin on both sides as well as some lymph nodes on my right side. This will get rid of my cancer and significantly decrease my risk of reoccurrence in the future. This also means that I will be cancer free! After tens of hours of meetings with surgeons and so so so much research ( mostly done by my mom, thank you, mom!) I truly feel like I found the perfect team with @drannepeled @peledmigraine. Whereas with traditional mastectomy which is safe from an oncologic standpoint but more care is taken when cutting nerves and nerve grafts are done to reconstruct cut nerves.”
She added, “ While it will certainly take a bit of time, I'm so grateful that I will return to looking and feeling like myself! Today step 2/3 will be finalized with radiation to follow.” She concluded by thanking her loved ones, “ the people in my life show up for me each and every day in ways that are so tender and heartwarming. I'm one lucky girl!!!!! T-1 hour until surgery.”
About one month before the post, the teenage actress had opened up to Good Morning America about her cancer battle, detailing her decision to freeze her eggs as a ‘preventative safety net’ should she lose fertility during treatment. She said, “ I think it’s one of those movie-like moments in someone’s life. I just didn’t feel like it was real.”
She had also shared her experience on her blog and on Instagram, writing, “ It’s so cathartic for me. My blog is the one thing that is super tangible that has come out of this where I'm like, ‘Damn, this is awesome.’ I'm hoping that by documenting a good majority of this, that someone else will be able to read it down the line when they need it, and they can find comfort and healing through it in the way that I do writing it.”
