The Old Town Road singer has spoken with CBS about his coming out journey and decided to come out following the success of his Old Town Road song, describing that it was the most authentic time to come out.
He started, “It’s like, I'm not doing it for attention. I'm already like the number one artist in the world right now. I don’t think that I would have ever come out. I honestly feel like it was kind of my duty. Especially if I wanted to move forward. And with what I was doing, because authenticity is very real, and I feel like people can see right through that. And that’s a part of me.”
The rapper also shared how he hesitated to involve his sexuality in his work. Still, he embraces it wholeheartedly and says, “I used to ‘like’ comments where people were like, ‘Oh, I like him, because he’s not all in your face about it’ And then I kind of realised what that was. It's kind of like when people say, ‘Oh, I have a Black friend’ and sits on everything that has to do with their Black history and culture...I'm kind of like, I’m not that person, you know?”
He also said he is much more out there with it and said, “it’s always been, ‘Okay, if you’re gay, this needs to be sanitized. Let'S not include anything sexual.’ It’s like, ‘Be gay without being gay. We don’t wanna know what happens behind closed doors, or we don’t want you to express that. I’m saying that I’m gonna do that if I want to. And I want every other artists to feel the same way.”

However, in October 2021, the rapper revealed himself to be single and said, “I was seeing someone, but I kind of decided I don’t want to anymore. Maybe I'm floating around right now. I just want to work on music, and every now and then, you know, maybe I'll kiss a guy every blue moon.”
He also told People how he wanted to focus on his music career and said, “It’s a lot of responsibility and I don’t think I'm ready to have that extra responsibility on my shoulders right now. When it happens, it’s going to happen.”
In an interview with Harpers Bazar, the rapper gave more details on his current situation and said, “I’ve been wanting somebody for so long and wanting somebody to love for so long but it’s a real responsbility. And you have to give this person your tie. And I like to go missing for like a week to focus....not talk to anyone and focus on myself. And I'm more in love with what I'm doing than people.”
He also talked about his ex-boyfriend and said, “I started actually dating ma last boyfriend this past year, who I'm still really on good terms with. I love him to death. He'S the best. I feel it was the most serious relationship I've ever had.”
