'The Duchess' was released on Netflix on 11 September 2020. The television series created by Katherine Ryan is about the story of a single mom who tends to raise her daughter in London, England. Ryan mentioned that she chose the civil partnership with Bobby Kootstra because she 'didn't need to put on a white dress and pretend to be a virgin.' The duo, who were childhood pals, reconciled while filming BBC genealogy program Who Do You Think You Are? in Ontario, Canada. The couple then entered the civil partnership back in December 2019 and chose to conduct their ceremony in Denmark.

"It’s perfect having a civil partner. We didn’t have a wedding, I didn’t need to put on a white dress and pretend to be a virgin, that ship has sailed!”
Although Katherine Ryan is not married, she has a daughter named Violet, whom she shared with her previous boyfriend. Violet is now ten years old. As per Ryan, her daughter did not want her to enter a civil partnership "because it had just been the two of us against the world for a long time." Ryan added:
"She was not trusting of my decisions. She put Chanel glasses on and moped around Tivoli Gardens [an amusement park in Copenhagen, Denmark] but we thought it was funny about an hour after it happened."
