Like a Christmas gift for Studio Ghibli’s fans, the legend Hayao Miyazaki has confirmed to come out of his retirement to make one last movie.
The Japanese filmmaker shared with The New York Times that he will be making one more film- a feature-length project called How Do You Live? The film will be based on the novel How Do You Live? By Genzaburo Yoshino, a story of 15-year-old Junichi Honda following the death of his father. He is nicknamed Koperu after an astronomer, Copernicus. He goes to live with his uncle and finds himself living very differently as the book deals with different perspectives, structures of society along with how Koperu views how he fits in the society.
The film was described as fantasy on a grand scale by Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki. He even said, “In the West, we always need to know how things end and At Ghibli, the last scene is often a mystery.”
The director Miyazaki had announced his retirement back in 2013 but made a short film titled Earwig and the Witch with his son, Goro Miyazaki for the Ghibli Museum. Then again, in 2018 Miyazaki couldn’t resist his work and came out of retirement to make a movie. His son, Goro shared, “He needed to create something in order to live, basically.”
The film has been in work since 2018 and the studio had said that it will be completed in the next three years. As per the latest interview, the movie seems to come. In an interview, Miyazaki was asked why was he making another movie to which he simply replied, “Because I wanted to.” And when asked the question ‘How Do you Live?’, he answered, “I am making this movie because I do not have this answer.”

He has over 35 credits in the animation department while working as a storyboard artist, character designer, and key animator.
Hayao Miyazaki is married to an animator Akemi Ota and shares two sons with her named Goro Miyazaki and Keisuke Miyazaki. They got married in 1965.
