The iconic actress, Bette Midler is married to her husband, Martin Von Haselberg, since 1984 in Las Vegas. She has talked about her wedding on Jimmy Kimmel Live! And shared how she eloped with her husband after she proposed to him. She revealed that she was the one to ask him and said, “I asked him. He got all dressed up in this suit. And I said I’m not marrying you in that suit. So he had to change his suit. We went to one of those little churches and we had to get a license. And when we got the civil ceremony, there was a girl there and a whole other family. There was the boy and his family. She didn’t have anybody and she was sobbing her eyes out, she was miserable. And she looked like she didn’t want to get married at all. We turned right around and walked out the door because we didn’t want to be a part of that. So we went to the starlight chapel and walked down the aisle and the Elvis Impersonator did the ceremony and then we walked out.”
She laughingly said, “My wedding was of two people, my husband and me. And of course the Elvis impersonator who got married.”
Bette also talked about how she didn’t have her wedding photos for decades until the chapel closed its doors about five years ago and said, “Of course there were no cell phones in 1984 and we had no photos, but apparently there was a photographer there and when the Starlight Chapel closed its doors about five years ago, they sent us the photos.” The couple received their wedding photos after almost 25 years.
The legendary actress has admitted that they used to fight bitterly however, the birth of their daughter, Sophie helped the two to eventually co-operate and came on the same page saying, “We came to conclusion that we wanted to raise a child. we never wanted to hurt that kid in any way. So we stayed together until it got better, and it did.” Her husband, Martin added, “There was a conscious effort to create exactly the life we have.”
The actress further went on to praise her husband saying, “My husband is probably the greatest father who ever lived. He taught her a foreign language. He taught her how to cook. He has looked after me for many, many years. He’s sacrificed a lot.”
She also admitted her difficulty in compromising and said, “Listening is very hard. And compromise. Compromise is the hardest of all. The blaming I think is the worst. It’s because you don’t want to carry the burden yourself. You want to push it off on someone else. But honestly, you have to learn not to do that.”
