The victim Mindy Morgenstern was a 22-year-old student at Valley City University from New Salem, and the convict, Moe, was a 35-year-old man living in the same apartment with his pregnant wife and stepdaughter at the time.

When Mindy was found hanged with deep wounds to her neck in September 2006, police were able to arrest Moe Gibbs for the homicide of Mindy as his DNA was found at the crime scene. The detectives traced the DNA evidence recovered from underneath the victim’s left-hand fingernails directly to Gibbs. Then, several female inmates also accused Moe Gibbs of sexual assaults, and he was found guilty of the unresolved 2004 rape case of a Fargo woman. Hence, he was given a life sentence without parole in Mindy’s murder case and another 15 years in jail for other sexual assault cases.
