Sadly, her mother attempted suicide after more than 87 days without Maya, and Beata left an email stating she was sorry and couldn’t handle the pain of being away from her daughter and treated like a criminal. Maya was released into her father’s custody five days after her mother’s death, and Maya’s family has filed a lawsuit against Johns Hopkins since then.
