Mason Martin suffered a significant brain bleed and a collapsed lung after being hit during the game on 4 September 2023. While giving his health update, his mother said his chest tube was removed, and his lung has recovered.  As per records, he kept playing after he got hit during the third quarter, his injuries caught up with him as the referee saw him staggering. He was soon taken off the field in an ambulance before he was flown to UMPC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Based on his health update from his family, he was unconscious but opened his eyes halfway and blinked till 11 October 2023. On 13 October 2023, he had surgery and had his cranial flap removed.
