Hannah Cornelius and her friend, Cheslin Marsh were carjacked after a night out on 27 May 2017. Hannah had offered to drop Cheslin home, and they were approached by four men when they were parking. The group of four men attacked them with a screwdriver and a flick knife and her friend, Cheslin was forced to the back seat while Hannah was shoved between the two front seats when they carjacked.
Several CCTV footage also showed the gang stopping at a petrol station to withdraw cash from Cheslin’s bank account. The gang drove 11 miles to the Kraaifontein suburb of Cape Town and pelted Cheslin with bricks. Cheslin managed to escape and was found by Averal Fortuin with a broken arm and several injuries. While the gang drove to a bush near a paintball range on Bottelary Road and raped Hannah. They took her near the Groenhof Farm in Stellenbosch, stabbing her twice in the neck. Later, she was killed with blunt force trauma with the 82lb rock.
The four men were arrested after undercover cops spotted Hannah’s car and they were sentenced to a combined 358 years behind bars with three of them given life sentences after a trial at Cape Town High Court in 2018.
