Cardell alleged that his father, Anthony had a dispute with an employee at a Walgreens store and was walking down a street carrying a small pocket knife. On April 2016, Cardell Hayes got into a confrontation with former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith after Will was dining with Billy Ceravolo, one of the police officers sued by Cardell in 2006. Cardell and Will raged with their words and Cardell took out his gun to shoot Will Smith to death and Smith’s wife, Racquel got shot in the leg. As per the witness, around six to eight shots were heard during the road rage incident in April 2016.
Cardell was indicted on 28 April 2016 and was found guilty of manslaughter in the death of Smith and attempted manslaughter for shooting Smith’s wife, Racquel. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison for manslaughter and was released on bond after serving more than four years. The court closures during the COVID-19 pandemic caused the delay of his retrial and he was recently found guilty again of manslaughter in the killing of former Saints DE Will Smith on 27 Jan 2024.
