The official land of 'Christmas Island' is located in the Indian Ocean that lies 224 miles south of the island of Java and 870 miles northwest of Australia. The place was first sighted by Richard Rowe in 1615, and it was named on Christmas Day in 1643 by Captain William Mynors of the British East India Company.

Things To Know On Christmas Island

After Great Britain annexed the island to its territory in 1888, George Clunies-Ross of Cocos (Keeling) Islands made the first settlement on the Christmas island at Flying Fish Cove.

Similarly, the land was encroached by the Japanese during World War II. But after ten years of engaging the interests and assets to Island Phosphate Company by the Australian and New Zealand governments, the island became an Australian territory in 1958.

Official Christmas Island now has a diversified population, including the people from China, Europe, Malaysia, and Singapore. And the administrator of the island is appointed by the Australian government.

By July 2016, Christmas Island had a total population of 2,205 with stratified ethnic people of Chinese, European, and Malay.

There Are More Than One Place Called 'Christmas Island'

Apart from official Christmas Island, there are several islands with the same name. Christmas Island in the Pacific, which is also known as Kiritimati, was first discovered by Captain Cook on Christmas Eve, 1777.

Similarly, a small village on Cape Breton, Nova Scotia in Canada, is also named Christmas Island, which is much snowier than other Christmas Island. The village was named after local indigenous Mi'kmaq family with 'Christmas' as their surname.
