Kamasi Washington Makes Late Night TV-Debut

The Jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington has made his debut at the late-night television show, which is none other than the famous NBC's The Tonight Show, starring Jimmy Fallon on 2 February 2022. The composer and saxophonist Washington performed his new first original recording titled The Garden Path after a year since the release of Sun Kissed Child.

Kamasi Washington has shared an official statement about the song, The Garden Path saying, "The world feels turned upside down. There's so much push and pull in every direction, from everyone you meet--no one knows what to think, who to believe, or how to approach life right now." His statement about the song reminded the listeners that it is hard not to feel blind even if you are smart.

His new song, The Garden Path, gives an insight into a sobering reality of the present dark times, and the song shows off Kamasi's prowess on his saxophone with the bright sound of brass contrasted with dark lyrics.

Kamasi Washington Parents & Family Details

Kamasi Washington was born to his father, Rickey Washington, and mother, Valerie Washington, in Los Angeles. His father is a professional saxophonist and a high school teacher, while his mother Valerie is an accomplished flutist and a high school chemistry teacher.

Kamasi has a musical family background so, it is quite understandable for him to pick up musical instruments at a young age, but he played piano and drums when he was two years old. He was given a clarinet by the age of seven, and he loved to play his father's saxophone when he reached 12 years old.

He soon played in his uncle's church band. He shared that once he played his favorite tracks on saxophone, he felt like it was his voice as the music in his head came out via it. His family had all the music books, videos, and albums that naturally shifted him into a musical career.

Kamasi also gives his father, Rickey, credit for molding him into jazz. Kamasi had shared how his father used to give him and his bands critiques after their performance, like, "You're out of tune. You're dropping beats." But one time, in a jazz-band concert in his senior year of high school, his father gave him good remarks, so that became a major moment for them.

Back in 2019, Kamasi had ended his show in Vienna, Austria, after only one song as he saw his father getting assaulted by the security guard. He told the crowd that a security guard had assaulted his father and was left with a really difficult choice. He said the security guard assaulted his father because he attempted to enter the venue without the necessary pass or identification. The venue then apologized to the crowd and confirmed their tickets to be refunded.
