Cathy Is A Commissioner For Women's National Basketball Association

Cathy Engelbert, age 54, started serving as a commissioner for the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) since taking the position on 24 May 2019 after the 2019/20 season began.

The NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced Cathy's new role in the basketball field as a commissioner before a week of her take-over on 15 May 2019. She was believed to begin as a commissioner on 17 July, but she came under the role just after a week.

As per Adam Silver, the basketball would extract some growth from her thirty-years of experience business and operational experience, including sharp entrepreneurial instincts, revenue generation, and proven management abilities.

As having a close exposure to basketball since her childhood, Cathy is believed to bring growth in the women's team with her leadership. Responding to her take-over and responsibilities, Cathy mentioned;

“I have the vision to transform the way corporate sponsors look at women’s sports. Less than 5% of corporate sponsorship money goes to women’s sports and less than 5% of media coverage. My goal is to get both up to 10%. That will improve the player experience, fan engagement—and all tides will rise.”

With no hesitation, Cathy is determined to promote women basketball, to work with the teams, and world-class athletes through her business expertise and passion for basketball.

Cathy's Career In Deloitte Before Joining WNBA

After graduating with a BS degree from Lehigh University, Cathy Engelbert made a direct move to Deloitte in 1986. After serving for twelve years, she became the partner of the company until 2019. In between her tenure, she also served as a Chairman and CEO of Deloitte and Touche LLP for a year from 2014 to 2015. 

From 2015, Cathy held the administration of Deloitte as the CEO for four years until 2019 before joining WNBA as a commissioner. She also became the first female CEO of the Big Four financial services firm.

With her works for over three decades in Deloitte, Cathy also became one of the powerful women in the world. While in Deloitte, she worked on providing the services of audit and assurance, tax, consulting, and risk and financial advisory to several private, small, and medium companies. 

Apart from that, she has been a Board Member of McDonald's from December 2019.

Calling the movement 'historical,' Cathy mentioned that every player would find their payment increased in the six-figures after the deal of eight-year labor. In a sense, Cathy, too, is entitled to the base WNBA salary of $130,000 per year.
