Who Was Margaretta Peter? Wikipedia & Parents

Margaretta Peter was a Swiss woman whose story has been covered by an Anglican priest, Sabine Baring-Gould entitled ‘ A Swiss Passion Play’ in Historic Odities and Strange Events collection in 1981. 

However, Margaretta Peter didn’t own Wikipedia page. Margaretta was born to her father, John who was a widower. Margaretta grew up with her older brother named Caspar and four older sisters named Barbara, Susanna, Elizabeth and Magdalena. Her father believed that Margaretta was set apart by God for some extraordinary purpose even after her crucifixion.

Besides, Margaretta was born to her parents on 25 December 1794 and she was only 28 years old when she died on 1823. Her zodiac sign was Capricorn and her birthplace was in Switzerland. Hence, she had Swiss nationality and she belonged to mixed ethnicity. She used to follow Christian religion and started reading Bible at the age of six.

Personality Change

Margaretta Peter was considered a prodigy as a child with forceful personality since she had aptitude for learning at school and was noticed for her devotion at church. In fact, the local pastor was impressed by her enthusiasm while his was preparing for her confirmation. However, her personality changed dramatically after 1816 when she was invited by her maternal uncle to work as his housekeeper in Rudolfingen. A Fundamentalist movement within Lutheranism called the Pietists came into contact with Margaretta and she became depressed with the prayer meetings of the movement.

After her siblings confronted her depressed state, she replied stating that God was revealing Himself to her more and she became conscious of her own sinfulness. After she returned home in 1817, she preach the World of God and her new three servants, Ernst, Ursula Kundig and Margaret Jaggli became her devoted disciples. 

Margaretta preached her message to areas like Wildisbuch and rest of Switzerland in 1820. Margaretta and her sister Elizabeth disappeared in 1822 and re-appeared on their own on 08 Janaury 1823. Margaretta became more bizarre and secluded herself with her sister in her room and read the Bible continuously. She warned her followers about the forces of Devils and believed herself to be the only one standing between Devils and humanity. 

Margaretta summoned her followers to her father’s house for the final battle with Devil in March 1823. She ordered her followers to take up any weapon and they attacked the furniture, walls and floor of her room. Margaretta ordered them to beat themselves after an hour and when police her followers were detained. 

Crucifixion

Margaretta ordered her followers to crucify her and promised them that she would rise from the dead three days later. Eventually, Margaretta was crucified and killed, but she didn’t rise from the dead disappointing her followers. Her followers were given prison sentences after a trial on 03 December 1823 and Margaretta’s house was razed to prevent building a pilgrimage.
