Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World is a Japanese light novel series based on genres like adventure, Isekai, and dark fantasy. Tappei Nagatsuki wrote the light novel while Shinichirou Otsuka illustrated the series.

The light novel began its serialization in an internet novel website called 'Shosetsuka ni Naro,' since 2012. Twenty-Two Tankobon volumes have been issued so far as of 2020 comprising with three side stories & 5 short story compilations. Media Factory published the light novel series under the imprint of MF Bunko J.

The light novel series was made into three separate manga adaptations, which were licensed by Yen Press. The first sequel was illustrated by Daichi Matsue, which was published by Media Factory between June 2014 and March 2015, comprising a total of 2 volumes. The 2nd manga sequel was illustrated by Makoto Fugetsu, which was published by Square Enix since October 2014, consisting of a total of 5 volumes. Matsue launched the third adaptation, which was published by Media Factory in May 2015, comprising a total of 11 volumes.

On the cast side, the manga series was adapted into an anime adaptation by White Fox, which made its debut from 4 April to 19 September 2016, comprising a total of 25 episodes. The anime adaptation was directed by Masaharu Watanabe, while Masahiro Yokotani composed the animated series.

The first opening theme song of this anime series was "Redo" by Konomi Suzuki, and the ending theme song was "Styx Helix" by Myth & Roid. The 2nd opening theme song of this anime series was "Paradisus-Paradoxum" by Myth & Roid, while the ending theme song was "Stay Alive" by Rie Takahashi. Crunchyroll and Funimation both licensed the animated series.

A total of 11 original video animation (OVA) adaptations was released from 6 October 2018 to 17 June 2016, comprising the 11th and 13th bundles of the manga series but was delayed to 4 December 2019. A second OVA was published on 9 July 2019, containing the 12th manga volume.

After the prosperous hit of this anime franchise, Re:Zero is set to be renewed for a 2nd season. The anime has gained a lot of popularity and fan base due to its persuasive anime story insights and enchanting, mystical categories. The release date for Season 2 of this anime franchise is scheduled to be released in Summer 2020. The anime's official site has also posted a key visual and an official trailer depicting the concept for the 2nd season.

On 23 March 2019, it was announced that the second season was already in the development state. The second season was supposed to be premiered in April 2020 but was delayed to July 2020 due to the production difficulties caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemics.

However, due to the global COVID-19 outbreaks occurring throughout the world, it is still not guaranteed that the anime sequel will make its debut in the upcoming summer of 2020.

Re: Zero centers around a boy named Subaru Natsuki, who abruptly finds himself deported to another world on his way from a leisure store. He stumbles into a silver-haired elf girl named Emilia and decides to help on her journey. During their adventure, the duo gets murdered, and Subaru wakes up possessing an extraordinary power with the name of 'Return by Death.'

The second season is deemed as two cour series that unveils the biggest mystery of Subaru's identity, like how he can control and return from his death. It also focuses on a new organization called 'Witch Cult' and the leader behind leading this unknown cult alongside various bishops, and more importantly, the fate of the demon maid Rem.

Season 2 also uncovers the mystery behind his transportation into this world with his newly-found godlike powers and a character named Satella who is controlling the scenes from the shadows.

Subaru is the main protagonist of this anime series. He is a 17-year-old hikikomori and shut-in gamer who abruptly finds himself being transported to another world on his way home from the convenience store. While venturing through the unknown world, he across a silver-haired half-elf girl named Emilia and falls genuinely in love with her.

He possesses an unusual power by the name of 'Return by Death,' that enables him to plunge back in the time zone where he dies, while still maintaining his memories of the previous timeline. He can't tell anyone about this ability because any attempt to do so puts him in jeopardize.

Despite being a regular person, he seems to work out occasionally and appears to comprehend himself with basic hand-to-hand combat. 

Emilia

Emilia is the main heroine of this anime franchise. She is a silver-haired half-elf girl and a spirit art user candidate to become the next queen in the royal referendum, making her 42nd King of Lugunica. She met Subaru when her insignia was stolen by Felt, which is necessary to be eligible to participate in the elections. She hails from the frozen forest and is over a hundred years old. Her cerebral state is still that of a teenager due to the time she lost when she was frozen in the forest.

Amongst the half breeds races and people who were victimized or disenfranchised in Lugunica, she is viewed as their salvation for a better future due to her paragon of democracy and better social equity.
